Once upon a time, there was a female duo, consisting of two very different girls from very different backgrounds but who became lifelong friends and musical partners. Siskin was born out of the London-based band GALEN, featuring the brilliant Rowan Diamond on drums, multi-talented Ivan Sheppard on keyboards and guitar geniuses Matt Blair, then Ewan Novak on 6-string duties.
The girls eventually pulled away from the harder band sound, writing harmony-laden, melodic pop and folk-tinged, lyrically rich songs. They performed at festivals and gigs around the UK and Greece and recorded their first album, produced by Stephen Lironi, in 2008 and 2009. They enjoyed radio play of their first single (and only cover) It’s Different For Girls, originally by Joe Jackson.
They released their album to accidentally coincide with the huge economic crash where their distribution company floated off into the ether along with Woolworths, Zavvi and various banks. Siskin decided they needed a break and a change of scenery. Galen moved abroad to work and pursue a solo career and Kirsty continued to mess around in comedy – but they always stayed in touch as close, sisterly friends, supporting each other through life milestones, weddings, bereavements and celebrations.
Then, Galen completed her beautiful debut solo album “Monument” – a tribute to her legendary musician father Kevin Ayers, who was, of course, a huge influence. She was asked to tour Japan to promote it and this seemed the ideal opportunity to reunite the Siskin ladies. Kirsty was thrilled to join her talented friend on an amazing and unforgettable adventure around Japan, meeting the most kind and generous people and fans and making friends for life. It was wonderful to work together again and both Kirsty and Galen resolved to make more music together in the future. Some musical pairings are simply magical.
